    Summary

Anas Sarwar is a Scottish Labour and Co-operative politician, born in Glasgow on 14 March 1983. He led the Scottish Labour Party from February 2021 to July 2026 and has served as Minister of State for Trade since July 2026; he was created Baron Sarwar. 1 2

Sarwar and some reporters said his election as leader made him the first ethnic-minority person to lead a major UK political party, and The Spectator acknowledged he was the first Muslim and the first person of Asian descent to do so. 1

    Early life and education

Anas Sarwar was born in Glasgow, the youngest of four children of Perveen Sarwar and Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, who represented Glasgow Central in the UK House of Commons from 1997 to 2010 and served two terms as Governor of Punjab, Pakistan (2013–2015 and 2018–2022). He was educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School in Glasgow, completed a degree in general dentistry at the University of Glasgow from 2000 to 2005, joined marches against the Iraq War as a student, and worked as an NHS dentist in Paisley from 2005 to 2009. 1

    Early political career

He began campaigning for Labour as a child of nine or ten and joined the party at fifteen or sixteen. His father was elected Labour MP for Glasgow Govan in 1997, becoming the UK's first Muslim MP; in that year Anas received an envelope containing a threat against his mother. Sarwar served as an executive member of Scottish Young Labour and joined the Co-operative Party, the Fabian Society, the Unite and Community trade unions and the pressure group Progress, of which he was a vice-chair in 2011. 1

He was selected as the lead Glasgow regional list candidate for the 2007 Scottish Parliament election and was not elected, later saying the candidacy was a chance to prove himself. 1

    Member of Parliament (2010–2015)

He was elected MP for Glasgow Central in 2010, succeeding his retiring father and increasing the majority. He served on the International Development Select Committee, with parliamentary interests in foreign policy and international development, particularly Palestine and Kashmir. He was elected Deputy Leader of the Scottish Labour Party in December 2011, received the Politician of the Year award at the British Muslim Awards in 2013, co-ordinated Labour's 2014 Scottish independence referendum campaign, became acting leader after Johann Lamont resigned in October 2014, served as Shadow Minister for International Development from 2014 to 2015, and lost his seat in 2015 to the SNP's Alison Thewliss. 1

Member of the Scottish Parliament and party leader

He was elected a Glasgow regional MSP in 2016 and appointed his party's spokesperson for health and sport. He lost the 2017 Scottish Labour leadership election to Richard Leonard, then won the leadership in February 2021 with 57.6 per cent of the vote against Monica Lennon. 1

He led his party into the 2021 and 2026 Scottish Parliament elections and the 2024 UK general election, at which Labour won a landslide. In February 2026 he publicly called for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign. After the 2026 election he resigned as party leader and as an MSP in July 2026 to serve as Minister of State for Trade in Andy Burnham's government, and was created Baron Sarwar, of Maxwell Park in the City of Glasgow, on 24 August 2026. 1

    Positions and criticism

This section sets out positions as reported in the sources; it is not a verdict by the museum. The article reports criticism of him for sending his children to the private school he himself attended, for his family firm advertising jobs below the recommended living wage, and for his absence from a 2013 parliamentary vote while in Pakistan. During the Gaza war he called for an immediate ceasefire, a policy at odds with that of UK Labour leader Keir Starmer at the time. 1

    Personal life

The museum records only what is needed to understand his public work: Sarwar is married to Furheen Sarwar, an NHS dentist, and they have three children; he is president of the Sarwar Foundation and, the article reports, teetotal. 1

    Reach

His public significance lies in being the first Muslim and the first person of Asian descent to lead a major UK political party, in succeeding his father in the same seat, and in his path from dentistry to party leadership, ministerial office and a life peerage. 1
