    Summary

Artur Asilbekovich Beterbiev is a Russian and Canadian professional boxer, born in Khasavyurt, Dagestan, on 21 January 1985, of Chechen descent.12 He won the world amateur title in 2009, won his first 20 professional fights by knockout, became the undisputed light-heavyweight champion in October 2024, and lost the rematch in February 2025.1 His professional record is 21 wins (20 by knockout) and one loss.3

    Career

Beterbiev was born in Khasavyurt and had more than 300 amateur bouts by the article's estimate, winning gold at the European Championships of 2006 and 2010, the 2008 World Cup and the 2009 World Championships at light-heavyweight, and reaching the heavyweight quarter-finals at the 2012 Olympics.1 He turned professional in 2013 after moving to Montreal, won the IBF light-heavyweight title in 2017, added the WBC title in 2019 and the WBA title in 2022.1 In October 2024 he beat Dmitry Bivol by majority decision to become the first undisputed light-heavyweight champion of the four-belt era, then lost the rematch in February 2025, also by majority decision — his only professional defeat.1 He lives in Montreal, is a Canadian citizen, is married with four children, and was made an honorary citizen of the Chechen Republic by Ramzan Kadyrov in October 2024.1

    Positions and criticism

This section sets out different positions as reported in the sources. It is not a verdict by the museum. The English article's personal-life section states, in one sentence: "Beterbiev is a Muslim", and the article reports that his title defences were scheduled around his observance of Ramadan.1 The Arabic article, a stub, makes no statement of his religion.3 Wikidata gives his religion as Islam, generically, naming no school.2 Because his Chechen descent and Dagestani milieu are context rather than attestation, his school is recorded in the museum's data as unknown.12
