    Summary

Assem Allam was an Egyptian-British businessman, born in Egypt on 1 August 1939 and died in Kingston upon Hull on 2 December 2022. He built the generator manufacturer Allam Marine and owned Hull City A.F.C. from 2010 to 2022. 1

    Life

Allam was born in Egypt in 1939 — the Arabic article gives the village of Al-Sadd in Qalyub district and the year 1940, which is why his birth is recorded as debated — and left Nasser's Egypt for Britain in 1968. 1 2 He studied economics at the University of Hull and qualified as an accountant. 1 No source read attests any religion for him: neither article mentions it and his Wikidata item carries no religion statement. 3

    Work

Allam joined Tempest Diesel and in 1981 used a loan to begin buying the company out; after it was placed in receivership in 1992 he repurchased its assets through a new company, Allam Marine, which grew into an internationally successful manufacturer of industrial generators. 1 He was named Ernst & Young UK Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006 and appeared with his son on the Sunday Times Rich List. 1 In September 2010 he took over Hull City A.F.C., then in financial trouble after relegation from the Premier League; his attempt to rename the club Hull Tigers was rejected by the Football Association and opposed by many supporters, and his family's ownership ended in January 2022. 1 He died on 2 December 2022, aged 83. 1
