Summary

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf ibn Dust, Abu 'Abdallah the cloth-merchant; born Safar 323; he transmitted from Isma'il al-Saffar, al-Mutayri and others, was abundant and retentive in hadith, and spent seventeen years dictating hadith from memory, versed in fiqh on Malik's madhhab. 1

His dictation

When told, "I see you dictate from memory — why not from your book?", he said: examine what I have dictated — if there is error I will not dictate from memory, and if it is all correct what need is there for the book? He died in Ramadan 407 and was buried beside the minaret of the Mansur mosque. 1
