Summary
Iqra Khalid (born 20 November 1986) is a Pakistani-Canadian lawyer and Liberal politician who has served as the member of Parliament for Mississauga—Erin Mills in the House of Commons since the 2015 federal election.1 She served as parliamentary secretary to the minister of national revenue from 18 September 2023.1
Career
Khalid was born in Rukanpur, in Rahim Yar Khan District, Punjab, Pakistan; in 1993 her family moved to England while her father completed his doctorate, and in 1998 they immigrated to Canada and settled in Mississauga, where her parents ran a small family business.1 She graduated from York University in 2007, where she studied criminology and professional writing, worked at an immigration firm, and completed a Juris Doctor at Cooley Law School in 2012, graduating with honours.1
Khalid won the Liberal nomination for Mississauga—Erin Mills in December 2014 and defeated the two-term Conservative incumbent in the 2015 election; she was re-elected in 2019, 2021 and 2025.1 She has served on the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, which she chaired from 2019 to 2021, and on the Subcommittee on International Human Rights.1 In the 45th Parliament she was elected vice-chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women and of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates.1
Works
In December 2016 Khalid introduced private member's motion M-103, asking the government to develop a strategy to tackle systemic racism and religious discrimination, including Islamophobia.1 In 2016 she brought forward a successful motion in the Subcommittee on International Human Rights to study the plight of the Rohingya minority in Myanmar, and in 2017 a successful motion for a study of human trafficking in the justice committee.1 From 2020 to 2021 she took part in the international human rights subcommittee's study of the Uyghurs, which concluded that the treatment of the Uyghurs was constitutive of genocide.1 Chatelaine magazine named her one of its Women of the Year in 2017 for her human-rights work.1
Positions and criticism
The judgements in this section belong to their sources, not to the museum. Motion M-103 drew sustained public and parliamentary debate in 2017, in which Khalid defended the motion as a step against systemic racism and religious discrimination.1 In 2023 she testified before the Senate of Canada in connection with its study of Islamophobia in Canada.1
