Career
Talabani joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party as a young man, broke with it to found the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in 1975, and spent decades between politics, exile and armed struggle for Kurdish rights. After the fall of Saddam Hussein he presided over the Iraqi Governing Council in November 2003 and was elected president in April 2005, beginning a second term on 22 April 2006 as the first president elected under the new constitution. Praised by obituarists as a mediator who brought Iraq's factions together, he served until 2014, when Fuad Masum succeeded him. 1
