Overview
Jarkas — also Jarkis — the great amir Fakhr al-Din al-Salahi; al-'Adil gave him Banias and al-Shaqif where he stayed a while; one of Salah al-Din's amirs who witnessed all the campaigns — generous, noble of worth, high of ambition. 1
His endowments
At Cairo he built the great Qaysariyya — so beautiful, so great, so solidly built that the lands say they see nothing like it — with a large mosque and a hanging quarter above it; "Jarkas," with a doubled kaf, means in Arabic "four souls." He died at Damascus in Rajab 608 and was buried at Qasyun in his mausoleum, endowed with a village in Wadi Barda called al-Kafr, twenty qirats of the village of Bayt Sawasi, and house-rents at al-Salihiyya; over his grave stands a great dome on the high road. 1
