Summary

A poet among the most poetic of the Arabs, son of the poet Zuhayr ibn Abi Sulma; he used to satirise the Prophet, then came to him repentant and recited "Banat Su'ad" — and he pardoned him 1.

His account

Ka'b ibn Zuhayr was of the house of poets, among the most poetic of the Arabs, and used to satirise the Prophet 1. His brother Bujayr warned him after the Prophet's return from Ta'if that the poets had fled in every direction and that the Prophet kills no one who comes to him repentant 1. So he came to Medina, lodged with a man of Juhayna, then went up to the Prophet in the mosque, placed his hand in his, and made himself known 1. A man of the Ansar sprang on him asking leave to strike his neck, but the Prophet said: leave him — he has come repentant, renouncing what he was upon 1. He recited his poem "Su'ad has departed, and today my heart is enthralled", excusing himself in it and praising the Prophet and the Muhajirun; then, once his Islam had become good, he made amends to the Ansar with a poem in their praise 2.
