Summary

Al-Mikhnaf ibn Sulaym (may God be pleased with him) al-Azdi al-Ghamidi, a Companion of the Azd of Kufa and Basra, with a hadith in the four Sunan collections via Abdullah ibn Awn from Amir ibn Abi Ramla: "We were standing with the Messenger of God ﷺ at Arafat when he said…" — the hadith of the sacrifice and the 'atira 1.

In al-Isaba

Ibn al-Kalbi places him among the Azd of Kufa and Basra and notes that his descendants include the famous akhbari Abu Mikhnaf Lut ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id ibn Mikhnaf ibn Sulaym 1. Al-Baghawi counts him a Companion whose hadith is in the four Sunan; al-Tirmidhi calls the Arafat hadith gharib, and al-Askari reports that his name was written with a doubled khaf while the ungeminated form was preferred 1.

For young visitors

Al-Mikhnaf ibn Sulaym was a Companion of the Azd who transmitted one well-known hadith about the sacrifice, and is the ancestor of the historian Abu Mikhnaf Lut ibn Yahya.

Research notes

  • Text from the Dar al-Faysaliyya facsimile, p. 1381; the name's vocalisation (Mikhnaf/Makhnaf) follows al-Askari as quoted in the entry itself.

al-Nu'man ibn Bashir al-Ansari

A companion of the Prophet from the Ansar; he transmits the hadith 'the lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear and between them are doubtful matters', the sixth hadith of al-Nawawi's Forty, transmitted from him by al-Sha'bi and included by both Shaykhs in their Sahihs; Ibn Rajab calls it the soundest hadith of its chapter.
