Summary
Muhammad Bin Shams El-Din is a Syrian preacher resident in Germany, owner of a main YouTube channel carrying his lessons in creed, hadith and fiqh and his live discussion streams, and founder of the Talib al-Ilm platform and the online Shams al-Din School for Islamic Sciences. 1
Al-Siyar, an encyclopedia of contemporary figures written by his critics, records that he was born in Deir ez-Zor province in eastern Syria in 1988 (1408 AH) — 'it is also said, about 1989' — and that his former name was Muhammad al-Sulayman. 2 A biography published by Aelm Al-Najah gives his origin as the Euphrates Jazira in north-eastern Syria, his tribe as al-Baggara, and a bachelor's degree in Sharia, and notes that no precise published data exists on his birth date. 3
Career
He is known essentially from his screen: his main YouTube channel publishes his lessons and live streams, in which he discusses questions of creed, fiqh and hadith and answers opponents, and some of his recorded lessons have passed two million views. 1
Alongside the main channel he runs channels for scholarly responses, short clips and audio, and a channel called Kashf al-Talbis; his official website (mshmsdin.com) collects his official account links, among them his Telegram channels, the Talib al-Ilm platform and the Shams al-Din School for Islamic Sciences. 1
Works
His published work is digital teaching: lesson series in creed, hadith and fiqh, among them a series teaching the principles of Islam from the beginning, a 'History of the Sects' series and a 'Personalities' series, and live debates and dialogues with opponents of several schools and persuasions. 1
Positions and criticism
This section sets out what the sources report; it is not a verdict by the museum.
In his channel description he presents himself as 'a Muslim on the way of Ahl al-Athar, belonging to no sect or group' — his own self-presentation. 1 The Aelm Al-Najah biography gives his madhhab as 'Ahl al-Sunna wa'l-Jama'a', a generic affiliation label, not the name of a school of law. 3 Against this, Al-Siyar files him under what it calls 'al-Haddadiyya al-jadida' (the neo-Haddadiyya) and accuses him of directing his attacks at major imams of the tradition, declaring them innovators and unbelievers; that classification and accusation are its authors' position, reported as such, not an agreed fact. 2 Because the sources diverge in this way, no school is recorded for him in the museum's data.
