Summary
Mustafa Hamsho (born 1953) is a Syrian former professional middleweight boxer who twice challenged for the world title against Marvin Hagler. He was born in Latakia on 10 October 1953 and competed from 1975 to 1989 with a record of 44 wins, 28 of them by knockout, 5 losses and 2 draws; the American press nicknamed him "Rocky Estafire" and billed him as the Syrian Slugger. 1 2 3
Career
He built a winning record on American rings in the late 1970s, defeated Wilford Scypion in June 1980 and former world champion Alan Minter on 6 June 1981, and so earned a fight with champion Marvin Hagler in October 1981. Hamsho waded into the champion looking for an opening while Hagler cut his face — the cuts needed 55 stitches — and his corner stopped the fight in the eleventh round; Sports Illustrated commended his courage. 1
He kept winning afterwards, defeating Curtis Parker, Bobby Czyz and former three-division champion Wilfred Benítez in 1982 and 1983, then met Hagler again at Madison Square Garden in October 1984, where Hagler floored him twice in the third round and his trainer stopped the fight. Hamsho fought on until 1989, losing to Donny Lalonde in 1987 and to Graciano Rocchigiani in the first round in December 1987. 1
A note on religion
No source consulted names a religion or a school for Mustafa Hamsho: not the English article's text, infobox or categories, not the Arabic stub, and Wikidata carries no religion value at all. His Syrian origin and his name are not attestations, so his religion is recorded as unknown in this record, on a complete absence of evidence. 1 2 3
