    Summary

Naazim Richardson (26 November 1965 – 24 July 2020) was an American boxing trainer from Philadelphia, most notable for training Bernard Hopkins and "Sugar" Shane Mosley.12 The English Wikipedia article describes him as a devout Muslim who was often acknowledged as "Brother" Naazim.1

    Career

Richardson was raised in Philadelphia, left home at fourteen, and was jailed as a teenager; The New York Times wrote that boxing took him from the streets of North Philadelphia and gave him energy and purpose.1 He was a head trainer at the Concrete Jungle gym in Philadelphia and at other gyms across the city, and worked for a time under the trainer Bouie Fisher; his son Rock Allen was a boxer before a car accident.1 In 2007 he suffered a stroke that temporarily left him unable to walk or speak, and he then returned to boxing as a trainer.1 On his return he became Shane Mosley's trainer for three major fights: the win over Antonio Margarito and the losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.1 Before the Mosley–Margarito fight in January 2009, Richardson caught plaster knuckle pads in Margarito's hand wraps, which led to Margarito's one-year suspension from boxing.1 Other fighters he trained or advised include Steve Cunningham, his nephew Karl Dargan, Badr Hari, Yusaf Mack and Sergio Martinez.1

    Positions and criticism

This section sets out different positions as reported in the sources. It is not a verdict by the museum. The English article mentions Richardson's religion once: "A devout Muslim, Richardson was often acknowledged as 'Brother' Naazim."1 Wikidata gives his religion as Islam, generically, naming no school.2 Because being described as devout and addressed by a religious title is not an attestation of a school, his school is recorded in the museum's data as unknown.12
