    Summary

Rafael Mahir Aghayev (born 1985) is an Azerbaijani karateka regarded as one of the most successful kumite fighters of his generation: a five-time world champion, an eleven-time European champion, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist, and the Karate Combat welterweight champion. He was born in Sumgait on 4 March 1985. 1 2 His nicknames are "Panther of the East" and "Diamond of the Karate World", the latter given him by the president of the World Karate Federation. 1

    Upbringing and training

He graduated from Sumgait city school No. 21 in 2003 and from the Azerbaijan Sport Academy in 2007 as a specialist trainer-instructor in karate, and served in the Azerbaijani Armed Forces from 2007 to 2008 before transferring to the Central Sports Club of the Ministry of Defence in recognition of his promise. He began karate at seven under his first coach, Rafael Mammadov, then trained at the Budokan club under Fizuli Musayev, joined the national team in 1997, and trained for more than eight years under senior coach Hidayat Shabanov and later under Rahman Hatamov; he captains the Azerbaijani team. 1

    Career and titles

He won the world title at 70 kg in 2006, two golds at the 2008 Tokyo championships (70 kg and open), the 75 kg title in 2010 and 2016, silver in 2012, bronze in 2018 and team bronze in 2021. In Europe he collected eleven championship titles between 2004 and 2018. He won gold at the inaugural European Games in Baku in 2015 and silver at Minsk 2019, gold at the 2013 World Games and the 2013 World Combat Games, and silver in the 75 kg division at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. 1 3

At the Islamic Solidarity Games he took bronze at Mecca 2005 and gold at Palembang 2013 and Baku 2017, all at 75 kg. 1 He also signed with Karate Combat and won its welterweight championship, standing at 5–0 in the promotion through 2023. 1

    A note on religion

No source consulted names a religion or a school for Rafael Aghayev: not the English article, not the Azerbaijani article, and Wikidata carries no religion value at all. His Azerbaijani origin is national background, which never counts, and his medals at the Islamic Solidarity Games are participation in a sporting event, not a personal attestation; no "Shia" claim exists in any source for the mapping rule to engage. His religion is therefore recorded as unknown in this record, on a complete absence of evidence. 1 3 2
