    Summary

Ragheb Hanafi Ragheb el-Sergany is an Egyptian preacher and historian and a professor of urology at Cairo University's Faculty of Medicine, born in El Mahalla El Kubra in the Gharbia Governorate in 1964. 1 2

He is known for his academic interest in Islamic history, for overseeing the Islam Story website (islamstory.com), and for books and lectures on the Prophet ﷺ's biography and Islamic history that reach a wide audience through satellite channels and social platforms. 3 1

    Upbringing and education

He was born in El Mahalla El Kubra, graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University in 1988 with honours, and completed his memorisation of the Qur'an in 1991. 1 3

He earned a master's degree from Cairo University (the Arabic article dates it 1992 and the English article 1998; the date is disputed), then a doctorate in kidney and urinary tract surgery in 1998 under joint Egyptian-American supervision. He served as a visiting instructor at Tulane University in New Orleans from 1994 to 1997, is an assistant professor — later professor — at the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, and a member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars and of the Egyptian and American Urological Associations. 1 3

    Beginnings and career

He launched a project he called "Together We Build the Best Nation", founded on a thorough, precise study of Islamic history, and has contributed lectures, books, articles and analyses. 1

He oversees the Islam Story website, a site devoted to Islamic history and the Prophetic biography, which is the main digital platform of his project. 3 1

    Programmes and works

He presents programmes and interviews on satellite channels including Iqraa, Al-Resalah, Al-Nas, Al-Quds, Sudan, Amjad, Al-Mustaqbal and Al-Hiwar, has been a guest on Al Jazeera, Al Jazeera Mubasher, Al Arabiya and Al-Rahma, and has taken part in radio broadcasts including Umm Al Quwain Radio and Qur'an radio stations in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan and the Emirates. 1

He has hundreds of lectures and recordings on the Prophetic biography, the Companions, the history of al-Andalus and the story of the Tatars, and presents history and preaching series on his official YouTube channel. 1

    Projects and initiatives

His chief project is Islam Story: a website and knowledge project presenting Islamic history to a general audience, joined to his "Together We Build the Best Nation" project, which treats the study of history as a path to building the nation. 1 3

    Recognition and prizes

His prizes include first prize in the Global Programme for Introducing the Prophet of Mercy competition (Saudi Arabia) in 2007 for «Al-Rahma fi Hayat al-Rasul» ("Mercy in the Life of the Messenger"); the Prince Nayef International Award for the Prophetic Sunna and Islamic Studies in 2012 for his study "The Environment in Islam: Investment and Protection"; the Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Award for excellence and creativity in Islamic culture (Bahrain) in 2011 for «Al-Mushtarak al-Insani» ("The Human Common Ground"); the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs award (Egyptian Ministry of Awqaf) in 2009 for «Maza Qaddama al-Muslimun lil-'Alam» ("What Did Muslims Give the World?"); the Islamic Center for Tawhid and Sunna Callers award (Egypt) in 2010 for «Uswa lil-'Alamin» ("An Example for the Worlds"); and the Indonesian Ministry of Culture's best translated book award in 2014 for the Indonesian edition of "What Did Muslims Give the World?". The Cairo Physicians Syndicate honoured him on Cairo Doctor's Day, 24 April 2009. 1

    Positions and criticism

This section should be read as a presentation of differing positions reported from the sources, not as the museum's verdict on them.

His historical writing rests on the idea that studying history is a path to the nation's revival and building — the stated premise of his "Together We Build the Best Nation" project. 1

His book list includes polemically titled works such as «Al-Shi'a: Nidal am Dalal?!» ("The Shia: Struggle or Misguidance?!", 2011), alongside books on contemporary political history such as "The Story of Erdogan" and "The Story of Secularism"; the museum presents them as part of his output as the sources record it, without adopting their positions. 1

    Books

He has published more than sixty books on Islamic history and thought, translated into languages including English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Indonesian, Turkish, Persian and Russian. They include the introduction to "The Simplified Encyclopaedia of Islamic History", «Maza Qaddama al-Muslimun lil-'Alam», «Al-Rahma fi Hayat al-Rasul» (2009), "The Story of al-Andalus from Beginning to Fall", "The Story of the Tatars from the Beginning to Ayn Jalut", "The Story of the Crusades", «Al-Mushtarak al-Insani» (2011), "The Prophetic Manner of Dealing with Non-Muslims" (2011), "The Ethics of War in the Prophetic Sunna", "The Story of Medical Sciences in Islamic Civilisation", "Masterpieces of Endowments in Islamic Civilisation", "The Environment in Islam" (2012) and "The Story of the Ottoman State" (2020). 1 3

The English article gives his following as about 240,000 on Twitter and about 260,000 on Facebook, and Wikidata records 853,000 subscribers for his YouTube channel on 16 June 2024; these are dated platform figures that change constantly, and the museum records them only with their dates. 3 2 His own YouTube channel is published under the handle @raghebelserganyst and is named as his channel in his own videos; it was verified in a channel harvest checked on 25 October 2026. 4
