Summary
Sariyah Idan is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet and theatre artist, born in New York and based in New Orleans, whose work blends jazz, folk, hip-hop and Latinx and Caribbean sounds. 1 2 She is a different person from Sarah Idan, the Iraqi-American crowned Miss Universe Iraq 2017. 1
Roots and training
Her own biographies describe her as born in New York, singing ensemble world folk music as a child, dancing professionally, and studying poetry and jazz, and as articulating her personal and cultural experiences against the backdrop of her Ashkenazi Jewish roots. 2 The Kennedy Center likewise describes her as jazz-trained, hip-hop educated, and influenced by the sounds of her Jewish roots. 1 These are the sources' descriptions of her heritage; no source used here names a denomination or a personal religious affiliation for her, so her data record leaves her faith as unknown. 1 2
Theatre and music
As an actor she is best known for her solo theatre show Homeless in Homeland, about Jewish identity and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which was praised in the United States and the United Kingdom and recognised in 2012. 2 She performed at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage on 2 August 2016, and has also performed at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York. 1 Her debut solo album Breaking Shadows (2019) was recorded in Los Angeles, Berlin and Lisbon with some 27 musicians, and was followed by Glitter & Blood (2023) and the live releases Live in Berlin, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. 2
