Education

Overview

Sayf al-Din Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Umar ibn Qutlugh Bugha al-Baktmari al-Qahiri, the Hanafi grammarian; al-Suyuti says: our shaykh the imam and polymath was born around the turn of the eighth century, studied under Siraj the reader of the Hidaya and Zayn al-Tafahni, and attached himself to Kamal al-Din Ibn al-Humam, profiting and excelling in fiqh, usul and grammar — Ibn al-Humam called him "the verifier of the Egyptian lands," given his Salafi path, worship and indifference to worldly folk. 2

Teaching and death

Ibn al-Humam made him deputy shaykh of the Shaykhuniyya on his first hajj; he headed the Zayn al-Din al-Ustadar school, taught tafsir at the Mansuriyya and fiqh at the old Ashrafiyya, and declined the hadith chair at the 'Ayniyya despite insistence; he left a long, useful gloss on Ibn Hisham's Tawdih. He died on Tuesday 12 Dhu'l-Qa'da, the last of al-Suyuti's shaykhs to die — only one man who had read him leaves of the Minhaj outlived him — and al-Suyuti elegised him. 2
