Summary
Shady Alsuleiman is an Australian imam and community leader, born in Sydney in 1978 to a Palestinian family that had migrated to Australia in the late 1960s. 1 He founded the United Muslims of Australia and Sydney Islamic College, and has been president of the Australian National Imams Council since 2016. 1 2
Study and institutions
He received an ijazah with sanad in complete memorisation of the Qur'an in Sindh, Pakistan, and spent six years studying in Damascus, specialising in Arabic and comparative fiqh and taking ijazas in fiqh, usul al-fiqh and hadith. 1 His own website records a Master of Sharia Islamic Studies and names the imams and scholars he studied under. 2 He served as secretary of the Australian National Imams Council from 2006 to 2015 before becoming its president, was re-elected in 2019, and is listed in The Muslim 500. In April 2018 Denmark added him as the 14th name on its list of preachers banned from entry, and in 2018 he won a defamation case against News Corp. 1
Positions and faith
This section should be read as a presentation of what the sources give, not as a verdict of the museum.
The English Wikipedia article's infobox gives his denomination as Sunni, without a citation, and Wikidata repeats the same value from that article tradition; his own website's biography names no school. That is one source family, not two independent attestations, so no faith value is recorded for him. 1 3 2
