Chief qadi Sharaf al-Din al-Manawi of Egypt, the Shafi'i — grandfather of Shaykh 'Abd al-Ra'uf al-Manawi, commentator of al-Jami' al-saghir; al-Suyuti says in Husn al-muhadara he was "our shaykh, shaykh al-Islam"; born 798, he kept close to al-Wali al-'Iraqi, formed under him in fiqh and usul, heard hadith from him and al-Sharaf b. al-Kuwayk, sat to teach and give fatwa, and notables were formed under him. 1

His judgeship

He held the teaching of the Shafi'is and the judgeship of Egypt, with a commentary on Mukhtasar al-Muzani; Ibn al-'Imad calls him "the last of the Shafi'i scholars and verifiers," mourning him: "I said, when the shaykh of the age died — truly, by agreement — now that affairs rest between the ignorant and the dissolute: O world, woe upon you till the day of meeting." He died on the night of Monday 2 Jumada II 871. 1
