    Summary

Shawki Allam (born 12 August 1961) is an Egyptian jurist and professor of jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University who served as Grand Mufti of Egypt from 2013 to 11 August 2024.12 He succeeded Ali Gomaa in the office and was succeeded by Nazir Ayyad.1

    Early life and academic career

He was born in the village of Zawiyat Abu Shusha in the El Delengat district of Beheira Governorate.2 He took his doctorate in Islamic jurisprudence from Al-Azhar in 1996, chaired the university's Jurisprudence Department at its Tanta branch, and was seconded to Oman's Institute of Sharia Sciences from 2001 to 2010.12

    Grand Mufti of Egypt

He was chosen as Grand Mufti in February 2013 — the Arabic article dates his taking office to 4 March 2013 — and his tenure, repeatedly extended, ended on 11 August 2024.12 Since 2025 he has been dean of the Higher Institute of Islamic Studies at Agouza in Cairo and a member of the Egyptian Senate.23

    School

The sources do not settle a personal school for him. The English article's text, citing an Egypt Independent report of February 2013, states that Allam is a Sufi, while the Arabic infobox gives Maliki fiqh on the strength of a news headline, and Al-Ahram's contemporary description of him as a professor of Maliki fiqh speaks to his teaching post rather than to a personal madhhab.12 His record therefore leaves his affiliation unclassified, holding both readings on file.
