    Summary

Taqi al-Din Ibn Abi'l-Yusr, the poet, has his famous ode elegizing Baghdad in 656 — among its lines: "He who asks the tears for news of Baghdad — why do you linger when the loved ones have departed? You who set out for the Fair City, press on no further: neither the folk nor the dwellings are there" — and: "The cross rose over the highest of her pulpits, and he whom a zunnar girds now commands." 1
