Life in time
In brief
Yahya b. Abi Kathir, the imam Abu Nasr al-Ta'i al-Yamami, one of the great figures; his report from Abu Umama al-Bahili stands in Sahih Muslim and his report from Anas in Sunan al-Nasa'i — the latter being mursal. 1
His transmission
He narrated from Abu Salama b. Abd al-Rahman, Abu Qilaba, Imran b. Husayn, Umm al-Mu'minin Maymuna, and a group; from him narrated Abdallah, Ikrima b. Ammar, Ma'mar, Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, al-Awza'i, Hammam b. Yahya, Aban b. Yazid, Jarir b. Atiyya, and many others. Shu'ba said "I asked Malik and he pointed me to al-Zuhri; I asked him about Yahya and he praised him", Abu Hatim called him a reliable imam who narrates only from reliable men, and Wahb relates that Ayyub al-Sikhtiyani said no one like Yahya b. Abi Kathir remained on the face of the earth. 2
His ordeal and death
It is reported that he was tried, flogged, and shaved because he excelled among the Umayyads — that is, he was punished in their era. A group dates his death to 129 AH. 3
