Summary
Yassine Bounou, known mononymously as Bono, is a Moroccan professional goalkeeper, born in Montreal, Canada, on 5 April 1991.12 He plays for Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal and for the Morocco national team.1 With Sevilla he won the Europa League twice and the Zamora Trophy, and he was Morocco's goalkeeper in their run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.1
Early life
Bounou was born in Montreal to Moroccan parents; his father, from the village of Bouana in Taounate Province, is an engineer and a former professor at the Hassania School of Public Works.1 The family returned to Morocco in his early childhood and settled in Casablanca, where he joined Wydad at the age of eight; the English article gives his age at the move inconsistently, as two in its lead and three in its early-life section.1 A move to French club Nice at seventeen fell through over bureaucratic problems, and he made his senior debut for Wydad as a starter in the 2011 CAF Champions League final against Espérance de Tunis.1
Club career
Bounou signed for Atlético Madrid in June 2012, playing for their B team and on loan at Zaragoza, and joined Girona in July 2016, helping them to promotion to La Liga.1 He joined Sevilla on loan in September 2019 and permanently a year later, winning the Europa League in 2020 and again in 2023, when he was named player of the match in the final after saving two penalties in the shootout against Roma.1 In 2021–22 he won the Zamora Trophy as La Liga's best goalkeeper, the first Sevilla goalkeeper to do so, and in August 2023 he signed for Al Hilal.1
International career
Bounou made his debut for Morocco on 15 August 2013, having declined an approach from Canada, the country of his birth.1 At the 2022 World Cup he saved two penalties in the shootout win over Spain and kept four clean sheets, the most in the tournament, as Morocco finished fourth.1 He was named the best goalkeeper of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which Morocco won, and has been named African Goalkeeper of the Year.12
Personal life
The English article's personal-life section states that Bounou is a Muslim; he married Imane Khallad in 2016 and their son Isaac was born in 2020.1 It also records that he donated blood after the 2023 Marrakesh-Safi earthquake, and that at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations he defended the use of Arabic at press conferences.1
Positions and criticism
This section sets out different positions as reported in the sources. It is not a verdict by the museum. The English article states simply that Bounou is a Muslim, citing a 2022 profile; the Arabic article's infobox carries no religion field and its text makes no statement of his religion.12 Neither source names a legal school or theological affiliation for him, so his faith is recorded in the museum's data as unknown.12
