Overview

Andkhuy is a town of about 25,000 people in north-western Afghanistan, in the province of Mazar-i Sharif, on the steppes that slope north some 50 kilometres to the Oxus. It lies on the perennial Andkhuy river and on the motor road joining Herat, Mazar-i Sharif and Kabul. 1

Trade and shrine

Its modern fame is as a leading centre of the karakul (lambskin) trade. Its one building of architectural interest and considerable age is the domed shrine of Baba Wali Sahib, a local Muslim saint whose proper name may have been Baba Shukr Allah. 1
