Overview
Al-Baladhuri reports that Isma'il ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Muhajir, governor of the Maghrib in the caliphate of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, called the Berbers to Islam. 1
The account
Umar appointed over the Maghrib Isma'il ibn Abd Allah, a client of the Banu Makhzum, who governed well. He called the Berbers to Islam. Umar wrote letters to them to this effect, and Isma'il read them to them in the districts. Al-Baladhuri says that Islam afterwards prevailed in the Maghrib. 1
The date is approximate, between 717 and 720 CE, and the conversion is derived.
