Saying 'by the blessing of so-and-so' or 'by the blessing of the Qur'an' in supplication

By Ibn Baz, Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah

حكم قول: ببركة فلان، أو ببركة القرآن

A question about the ruling on saying in supplication 'O God, grant me this matter by the blessing of so-and-so, or by the blessing of the Qur'an', in which Ibn Baz answered that if so-and-so had a part in bringing the matter about, or could have had one, there is no harm, as in 'O God, ease my affair by the blessing of so-and-so' or 'O God, settle my debt through so-and-so', meaning through his agency; but where the person had no part in it, the statement is a falsehood. He said that saying 'O God, forgive me by my reading of the Qur'an, my knowledge of it, my recitation of it or my memorisation of it' does no harm, because the Qur'an is God's speech, so this is seeking a means through God's speech.

Summary

A question about a supplicant saying 'O God, grant me this matter by the blessing of so-and-so, or by the blessing of the Qur'an', in which Ibn Baz answered that there is no harm in it if so-and-so had a part in the matter, otherwise it is a falsehood, and that seeking a means through one's reading and memorisation of the Qur'an does no harm, since it is seeking a means through God's speech. 1

The question

The questioner asked: what is the ruling if someone says 'O God, grant me this matter by the blessing of so-and-so, or by the blessing of the Qur'an'? 1

The answer

Ibn Baz answered that if so-and-so had a part in bringing the matter about, or could have had one, there is no harm, as in 'O God, ease my affair by the blessing of so-and-so', 'O God, settle my debt through so-and-so', or 'O God, relieve me through so-and-so', meaning through his agency; but where the person had no part in it, the statement is a falsehood. 1 He said that if someone says 'O God, forgive me by my reading of the Qur'an, by my knowledge of the Qur'an, by my recitation of the Qur'an, or by my memorisation of the Qur'an', this does no harm, because the Qur'an is God's speech, so it is seeking a means through God's speech. 1
