Meaning

Idhkhir is a plant with a sweet smell. 1

General ruling

It is not lawful to cut any tree of the sacred precinct of Mecca that grew without human hand, but idhkhir is excepted and may be cut, because the Prophet ﷺ made an exception for it on account of the need for it, as in the report of al-Bukhari and Muslim from Ibn Abbas on the sanctity of Mecca. 1 Al-Abbas said: "except idhkhir, for our goldsmiths and our graves", and the Prophet said "except idhkhir", and one version has "for our graves and our houses". 2 Where cutting and using it is allowed, the use must not be for perfume. 2 The jurists treat this in the chapter on the pilgrimage, under what is forbidden in the sanctuary: game hunting and cutting trees and the like. 2
