Summary

Sheikh Omar Abdelkafy speaks of death as a passage on which a person takes only his deeds into the grave: his goods stay behind and his family walks him to the grave's edge. He gives narrations and stories about burial and the grave and presents them as his own account; some of them are not sourced in the recording 1.

What the dead leave and what goes with them

He says the dead person's goods stay behind him, his family accompanies him to the grave, and only his deeds go into the grave with him 1. He says the shroud is the only worldly thing a person takes with him, and that he enters the grave as he came out of his mother's womb, poor and naked 2. He tells that Hatim found that the only beloved who goes into the grave with a person is his good deeds, which become his companion in the grave 3.

He says a good person is missed when he is absent and remembered kindly when he dies, and that people should be present for one another 4. He tells that Hasan al-Basri heard a group weeping and laughing at a funeral, and said they were mourning travellers for travellers; he likens life to a train with stations, and says each person will get off at his own station (needs_source: the anecdote is not sourced in the recording) 5.

The shroud, burial and the funeral

The speaker cites a hadith on the reward of one who attends the funeral prayer and walks with the bier, and says the reward is two qirats, each like a mountain (needs_source: the hadith and the figures are not sourced in the recording). He tells that Ibn Umar regretted the qirats he had missed, and checked the matter with Aisha 6.

He cites a verse on the creation of man from dust and his return to it, and describes throwing dust on the grave at three points 7. He tells the story of the man who denied the Hour, whose companion reminded him that he was created from dust and then formed; he says it is from the Qur'an, without naming the place 8.

He urges hastening the burial of the dead, and says that this is recommended 9. He tells that two gravediggers in Medina, one digging a niche and the other a shaft, both made istikhara; the one who came first was chosen, and the Prophet ﷺ was placed in the niche (needs_source: the narration is not sourced in the recording) 10.

The grave and its companion, in the speaker's account

He tells a hadith about a handsome, fragrant figure that comes to the grave of a righteous person to keep him company until the Hour (needs_source: the hadith is not named in the recording) 11. He gives the counterpart narration, in which an ugly figure comes to keep an evil person company (needs_source: the hadith is not named in the recording) 12.

In one narration he gives, the grave of a believer is widened and his seat in Paradise is shown to him, while the grave of one who did not believe is narrowed; he cites Umar's request to be carried quickly to his grave (needs_source: the narration is not sourced in the recording) 13. He cites a hadith on hastening the funeral, and says the wicked would be hurried off if people knew what awaited them 14.

He describes the story of a traveller who asked a guide to the city and was led to a graveyard, where everyone had come to the city and none had come back 15. He recites a line of verse about sleeping in the grave and the day of reckoning, without naming its author in the recording (needs_source: the author is not named) 16.

The speaker's view: preparing for that day

The speaker criticises people who talk about market prices while standing at a grave, and asks whether anyone has prepared for that day 17. He says the grave is a box of deeds, and criticises those who give false witness, swear false oaths and wrong others 18.

Bone (adhm): purity, use and retaliation

In the lexicon, adhm is the bone that has flesh on it, plural 'idham and 'izam. Most jurists hold that a human bone is pure, whether living or dead, of a Muslim or not; that a fish bone stays pure after death; and that the bone of a lawfully slaughtered edible animal is pure and may be used. The bone of carrion, or of a non-edible animal, is impure according to the Malikis, Shafi'is, Hanbalis and Ishaq, and cannot be purified; the Hanafis hold it pure, and 'Umar disliked oiling in ivory. On cleansing after excretion with a bone, the Shafi'is and Hanbalis forbid it; the Hanafis dislike it as forbidden but accept that it suffices; the Malikis forbid a carrion bone and allow a pure bone with disapproval. Most jurists allow retaliation for a bone only at a joint, since equality cannot be achieved elsewhere.
