Overview
In 394 al-Asayfar al-Muntafiq intercepted the hajj caravan in the desert, besieged them and resolved to plunder them; Abu'l-Husayn b. al-Raffa' and Abu 'Abd Allah b. al-Dajjaji the two reciters entered to him and read before him, and he asked them of their livelihood at Baghdad — "stipends, robes and gifts reach us." When they denied that the Baghdadis had ever granted them a million dinars he said: "Then I grant you the pilgrims and their wealth — worth more than a million" — and made it good to the pilgrims; the people of Mecca, Egypt and Syria said they had heard of none better.
