Scripture and its sciences

Overview

Abu'l-Husayn Ibn al-Raffa' the Reader, pupil of Abu'l-Hasan Ibn al-Khashshab; sweet-voiced and excellent in recitation, among the finest readers of his time together with Abu 'Abdallah Ibn al-Dajjaji. 1

The affair of al-Usayfir

In 94 [sic: i.e. the fourth century] al-Usayfir al-Muntafiqi held up the hajj caravan; the two readers entered to him and he granted them the pilgrims' gifts and monies, over a thousand thousand dinars; and when Abu'l-Husayn b. Buwayh reached Baghdad he took the pair and set them for the tarawih prayer, alternating the lead — and people grew eager for tarawih because of them. 1
