Overview

The battle of the Tawwabun took place in 65 AH, according to al-Mas'udi. The Shi'a moved out in remorse for having held back from supporting al-Husayn. They gathered around five leaders who encamped at al-Nukhayla. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad then met them with thirty thousand men. Sulayman ibn Surad was killed by an arrow, and al-Musayyib ibn Najaba took up the banner. The encounter took place at Ayn al-Warda, on the bank of the Euphrates. 1
