Summary
Canadian Islamic History Month is October of every year in Canada, first established in 2007 as a time "to recognize, celebrate and reflect on the rich history, culture, and contributions of Muslims in Canada", as the Government of Canada's page describes it. 1
How it began
The federal page states that the month was "first established in 2007" and presents it as an opportunity for all Canadians to engage in dialogue, advance understanding and foster inclusion and appreciation of the diversity of Canadian Muslim communities. 1 The page does not name the parliamentary instrument that created it, and English Wikipedia had no article under this name when searched on 6 November 2026; a later researcher fills that gap from the parliamentary record. 1
How it is marked
The Office of the Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, within the Department of Canadian Heritage, publishes educational materials, posters and videos for the month that can be downloaded, printed and shared. 1 The 2023 campaign was "Celebrating the Contributions of Muslim Women and Girls", the 2024 campaign "Celebrating Generations of Canadian Muslims", and the 2025 campaign "Together for Canada", which presents stories of Canadian Muslims, encourages allyship in the face of rising Islamophobia and is built around the Canadian Guide to Understanding and Combatting Islamophobia. 1
What it connects to
The same page presents the Green Square campaign, launched by the National Council of Canadian Muslims in January 2020, in which people wear a green square in the week before 29 January, the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia. 1
Today
The month continues every October, and the government page is updated with each year's campaign. 1
