Summary
On the night of Sunday, the sixteenth of Sha'ban in the year 398, a great earthquake struck Dinawar. It toppled houses and killed more than sixteen thousand people. 1
Deaths and losses
Reports said that the houses were toppled and that more than sixteen thousand people perished in them, not counting those swallowed by the earth or buried under the rubble. Survivors went out into the desert and lived in huts they built, and countless furnishings and goods were lost in what collapsed. 1
A year of portents
This earthquake came in the same year as other quakes and storms: a tremor at Siraf in which ships sank; a black storm at Daquqa that uprooted houses, date palms and olive trees; a violent black wind at Shiraz that burned crops and destroyed part of the town; and a great hailstorm at Wasit and on both banks of the Euphrates, each hailstone weighing one hundred and six dirhams. 1
