Fatima's claim to the Prophet's inheritance and Fadak

between 632 and 634 CE · 11 AH

Fadak

After the Prophet ﷺ's death Fatima and al-Abbas asked Abu Bakr for their share of the Prophet's estate, the land of Fadak and his share of Khaybar. Abu Bakr answered with the report that prophets leave no inheritance, and said he would keep the Prophet's practice. Sallabi records the Sunni reply to the Imami claims and reports that Fatima was pleased with Abu Bakr before her death.

Opinions on the question

The question: Did the Prophet leave an inheritance, and was Abu Bakr wrong to withhold Fadak?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Sallabi, citing Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn Kathir: the hadith that prophets are not inherited is reported by a wide group of Companions, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Talha, al-Zubayr, Sa'd, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, al-Abbas, the wives of the Prophet and Abu Hurayra; Ali did not divide the estate when he held power; and Fatima was reconciled with Abu Bakr.
More opinions (1)

Shia (Twelver) viewOther opinion

Imami reports, as cited by the book, say Abu Bakr and Umar seized Fatima's inheritance and Fadak, that the Prophet's heritage was Fatima's alone, and that the Prophet's words on not being inherited were invented; Sallabi refutes these reports on their chains, their logic and their consistency.
