Damietta

In 618 al-Ashraf set out to aid his brother al-Kamil, and the army of Syria marched with him. The Franks left Damietta on horse and on foot during the Nile's rise and camped beside a canal; the Muslims breached the Nile onto it, and the water kept them from reaching Damietta. The fleet came, seized the Frankish ships and captured some eight hundred horsemen, among them the lord of Acre, and a host of foot soldiers. When they saw their ruin, they asked for terms, to hand Damietta over to al-Kamil, and he agreed. Then his brothers al-Mu'azzam and al-Ashraf came to him with the troops in Rajab; he prepared a great banquet, brought in the kings of the Franks, bestowed favours upon them, and it was a day long remembered 1.

Summary

In 618 AH al-Malik al-Ashraf marched to help his brother al-Kamil, and the army of Syria marched with him. The Franks came out of Damietta with horsemen and foot soldiers during the season of the Nile's rise. They camped by a canal, and the Muslims breached the Nile over it, so it did not stop them from reaching Damietta. The fleet came and seized the Frankish boats, and about eight hundred horsemen were captured, among them the lord of Acre and many foot soldiers 1.

When they saw their defeat, they asked for a truce on condition that they hand Damietta over to al-Kamil, and he accepted. Then his brothers al-Muʿazzam and al-Ashraf came to him with their armies in Rajab. He held a great banquet, brought in the kings of the Franks and bestowed gifts on them, and his brothers stood in his service. It was a day remembered 1.

Raja al-Halli then stood up and recited a poem in which he pointed to the three brothers 1.

This ended the Frankish campaign against Damietta. The Franks had taken it in 616 AH after besieging its people and after plague struck them, and they returned it two years later, having lost through the weakness they had thought was a prize. Its lesson stayed in people's minds for a long time, since they saw that the lands of Islam are not taken except through the failings of their people, not through the strength of their enemies 2.

Death of al-Malik al-Adil and his sons' succession

al-Adil died in extreme old age; al-Kamil took Egypt, al-Mu'azzam Damascus, al-Ashraf the Jazira — all deferring to al-Kamil, so the Ayyubid house held together.
