Ifriqiya

Ifriqiya rose: Heraclius's patrician landed at Carthage to reclaim the old tribute, and the Ifriqiyans answered «we pay what was always taken from us — he should have excused us after what the Muslims took.« Mu'awiya ibn Hudayj al-Sakuni marched into a burning land, camped at Qamuniya, and when the patrician hurled thirty thousand at him the Romans broke and Ibn Hudayj held Ifriqiya 1.

Overview

Ifriqiya rose: Heraclius sent his patrician to take from its people what the Muslims had taken; they refused, saying "we pay what was taken from us — he ought to have excused us given what the Muslims took of us." The patrician landed at Carthage and gathered the people of Ifriqiya. Mu'awiya dispatched the exiled patrician's counterpart Mu'awiya b. Hudayj al-Sakuni; he came to an Ifriqiya ablaze, camped at Qammuniyya, met the patrician's thirty thousand, routed the Romans, and Ibn Hudayj mastered Ifriqiya 1.

Abd al-Rahman ibn Habib's Independent Rule of the Maghreb Frontier

In al-Baladhuri: when al-Walid ibn Yazid ibn Abd al-Malik rose, Abd al-Rahman ibn Habib al-Fihri opposed him — beloved in that frontier for his grandfather Uqba ibn Nafi's traces there — and prevailed over it, Hanzala withdrawing; Yazid ibn al-Walid sent no governor to the Maghreb, and when Marwan ibn Muhammad rose, Abd al-Rahman corresponded with him, showed obedience and sent gifts — his scribe being Khalid ibn Rabi'a al-Ifriqi, between whom and Abd al-Hamid ibn Yahya ran friendship and letters — so Marwan confirmed him over the frontier; then Ilyas ibn Habib ruled after him, then Habib ibn Abd al-Rahman, then the Berbers and the Ibadis of the Khawarij prevailed.
