Summary
In 621 AH Badr al-Din Lulu seized Mosul, strangled the son of his former master Mahmud ibn al-Qahir, and claimed that he had died 1.
Lulu had been a mamluk of the rulers of Mosul from the Zangid house. He rose through service until he became the master of the household and then the effective ruler. When al-Malik al-Qahir Mas'ud died in 615 AH and his small son succeeded him, and then that son died at the end of the year, Lulu continued to manage the realm. In this year he seized the city, caused the death of the last of his masters' sons, and consolidated his rule. His rule lasted about forty years, until he formally took the sultanate in 631 AH, and the sermon was given in his name from the pulpits 1.
