Commanders: al-Mu'tadid bi-llah
Overview
In the first night of Safar 280 al-Mu'tadid rode out of Baghdad against the Banu Shayban fastness, struck them, killed and captured. With him was a sweet-voiced guide who chanted the ode of al-Nubadh to a tribesman until al-Mu'tadid's eyes welled — "none escaped the horrors." He entered the Arabs' tents nearly unattended; Badr caught up and asked "had they known you and fallen on you, what then?" — he answered "had they known me you'd all have drowned; do you not know the Rusafa quarter alone is twenty thousand?" 1.
