The Prophet presents himself to the tribe of Shayban

between 610 and 622 CE

Mecca

Before the Hijra, the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to present himself to the Arab tribes. With Ali and Abu Bakr he went to Mina and met the Banu Shayban ibn Tha'laba; the talks ended without an alliance, and Ali learned that support for the call must not be bought with power or reward.

Opinions on the question

The question: Can a tribe offering support be given rule or a reward in return?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Al-Sallabi writes that the Prophet refused any guarantee of a share in rule to those offering support, because the call is for God and requires sincerity, and that he would not bind support to a treaty contrary to the call (pp. 36-37).

The three years of the secret call

The first stage of the call to Islam — individual and secret for three years — in which the first band believed: Khadija, Ali, Zayd and Abu Bakr on the first day, then those whom Abu Bakr called, then a company Ibn Hisham numbers at over forty from every clan of Quraysh; during it prayer was first prescribed.
