Summary
Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun, wearying of the senior amirs' tutelage, abdicated in 708 and installed himself as governor of al-Karak while Baybars al-Jashankir took power in Cairo; five months later the loyalist al-Nuwayri joined him at al-Karak in Rabi' II 709 (September 1309) and returned to Cairo only with the sultan when he regained the throne at the end of Ramadan 709 1.
Loyalty repaid
The Encyclopaedia of Islam counts this among the clearest strokes of his character: he sided with al-Nasir during Baybars II's interlude, holding him the only legitimate sultan — and was repaid after the restoration when the sultan's steward Ibn Abbada brought him into close service of the sovereign 2.
