Low Water and Dredging of the Tigris in 400 AH

نقصان ماء دجلة وكريه سنة أربعمائة

c. October 1009 CE · Rabi' I 400 AH

Baghdad

In Rabi' I 400 the Tigris fell to an extraordinary low, such as had never been known: islands appeared in it that had not been there before, and boats were stopped from sailing from Anah and al-Rashidiyya on the upper Tigris, so dredging was carried out at this spot. The dredging of the Tigris was remarked and marvelled at, for the river had never been dredged before except in this year. 1

Summary

In Rabi' I of year 400 the Tigris fell to a low never before known; islands appeared in it that had not existed, and boats could not sail it from Anah and al-Rashidiyya on the upper reaches 2.

The dredging and its strangeness

Ibn al-Jawzi says men were sent to dredge that spot, "and the dredging of the Tigris was found a marvel and wondered at, for the Tigris had never been dredged before this year" 2.

For young visitors

In year 400 the Tigris ran so low that new islands showed and ships stopped moving, so workers were sent to dig out the riverbed — the first time anyone remembered the Tigris being dredged.

  • Kara = scouring/deepening the riverbed; a striking counterpart to the next year's flood (see event/tigris-flood-401).

The Nizamiyya Madrasa of Baghdad

The Nizamiyya of Baghdad, first and most famous of the madrasas founded by the vizier Nizam al-Mulk al-Tusi: building began in 457 and sisters rose at Nishapur, Isfahan, Herat, Basra, Mosul and Amid; the Imam al-Haramayn al-Juwayni then Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi taught in it, and it mothered the Sunni institutional model that the later madrasas of Baghdad followed — the caliphs prayed there and Nizam al-Mulk himself visited to inspect its library.
