Summary
Al Rayan Bank PLC, formerly the Islamic Bank of Britain, is a UK commercial bank established in August 2004 to offer Sharia-compliant financial products to customers of any faith. 1 It has become popular with many non-Muslims looking for an ethical alternative to conventional banks. 1 It has a Sharia department and an independent Sharia Supervisory Committee to ensure its products comply with the principles of Islamic finance. 1
Founding
A group of Middle Eastern investors formed it; it raised £14 million in start-up capital by early 2003, and the Financial Services Authority authorised it in August 2004. 1
In the Al Rayan group
On 16 January 2014 the bank confirmed Qatar's Masraf Al Rayan as its new parent, and in December 2014 it changed its name to Al Rayan Bank. 1 The Bank League Tables 2017 named it the UK's third fastest-growing bank for 2016, and in November 2017 Moody's assigned it an Aa3 deposit rating. 1 That month its former chief executive Sultan Choudhury was appointed OBE for services to Islamic finance. 1
