Summary
Abu al-Fada'il Izz al-Din Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad al-Wafa'i (811–879/1408–1474) was an Egyptian astronomer who served as timekeeper at the Mu'ayyadi Mosque (the mosque of al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh beside Bab Zuwayla) and elsewhere; the Bibliotheca Alexandrina book credits him with more than twenty treatises and forty manuscripts, and says his work centred on timekeeping by longitude and latitude. 1
Works
They include Talkhis al-durar al-muntathirat fi al-amal bi-rub' al-muqantarat, Khulasat al-durar fi al-amal bil-qamar, a note on computing inclined sundials, a treatise on the triangle instrument, and a treatise on the da'irat al-mu'addil. 1 The book notes that Abu al-Fath al-Sufi al-Misri, in his commentary al-Mufassal fi da'irat al-mu'addil, states explicitly that al-Wafa'i invented the instrument. 2
