    Summary

    What the recordings show

    He presents the programme alone before the camera, in an Egyptian speech that mixes formal Arabic with the colloquial, joking with the studio crew by name and calling them his brothers at al-Nada channel. 4 5 In the sixth episode he says he worked as a teacher in some private Azhari institutes, and tells there the story of a pupil whose father beat him and called him a failure. 6 7 8 He says he has three children, speaks of an elder daughter and a younger son, and draws on his experience with them in prayer, play and listening. 9 10 11 12 He tells how he visited his father in al-Mansura with his son, then three, and the little boy came to him after the prayer soaking wet, saying he had made his ablution, and he praised and hugged him. 13 14

    What he tells of his childhood

    He recalls that as a small boy he went into the mosque of his village with his father, and when he played with the water the mosque attendant would come out to him during the prayer and rap him on the head, until he came to hate entering the mosque; he uses this as an example of what turns children away from prayer. 15 16 He recalls that in the fourth year of primary school his classmates told a fearsome teacher that Abd al-Rahman had a fine voice in reciting the Qur'an; the teacher threatened him if he did not come first in the school's Qur'an competition, he could not even recite al-Fatiha in the competition, and the school's owner, a friend of his father's, took him home, where he told his father he would not go back to school. 17 18 19 20 21 He draws from both stories that harshness makes a child hate what he is meant to love. 16 21

    His approach in the programme

    He repeats that upbringing should follow "the method of prophethood" and that parents answer before God for their children, citing the verse of Surat al-Tahrim (al-Tahrim 66:6) and the hadith "each of you is a shepherd". 22 23 24 Gentleness runs through what he says: the kind word, listening, gradual steps, example, never striking a child before ten, and striking as the last of all means. 25 26 27 28 He relies heavily on everyday examples from the Egyptian home, school and workplace, and on stories he tells about himself and people he has met. 29 30 31
