Abd al-Wahhab ibn Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani

عبد الوهاب ابن عبد القادر الجيلي

c. July 1128 CE · 2 Rajab 522 AH – c. September 1197 CE · 15 Shawwal 593 AH

Abu Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab, son of Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, the Baghdadi Hanbali preacher; b. 2 Sha'ban 522, trained under his father till he excelled, lecturing as his deputy at the madrasa from twenty-odd, then independently after him, and held the mazalim office for al-Nasir in 583. Clever, graceful, one of Baghdad's wits — none of his father's sons was more learned in fiqh; eloquent in preaching with a taste for jest. Once asked in his session 'what say you of the Prophet ﷺ's house?' he answered 'they have blinded me' — being himself weak-eyed — answering for his own house. He died Wednesday night 15 Shawwal 593 1.

Overview

Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-Wahhab b. Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, the Baghdadi Hanbali preacher; born 2 Sha'ban 522, his father had him audit while still a boy, and he read fiqh under him until he excelled, lecturing as his deputy at the madrasa while his father lived — he was then past twenty — and independently after him; he held the mazalim office for al-Nasir in 583. 1

His wit

Clever and graceful, one of Baghdad's wits; none of his father's sons was more versed in fiqh — eloquent in preaching, apt with choice anecdotes, humorous, good-natured and shrewd. Asked one day in his session, "what say you of the People of the House?" he answered, "they have blinded me" — he was weak-eyed himself — answering for his own house. He died on the night of Wednesday 15 Shawwal 593. 1
