Summary
Ahmad Bahauddin Nursalim, widely known as Gus Baha, is an Indonesian Qur'an scholar from Rembang, Central Java, born on 29 September 1970. He leads the LP3IA Tahfidzul Qur'an pesantren at Narukan, was appointed to the supreme council of Nahdlatul Ulama in 2022, and is known for detailed, text-based studies of the Qur'an delivered in an informal style. 1
Early life and family
Gus Baha is the son of Kiai Nursalim al-Hafizh, a Qur'an expert and caretaker of the Tahfidzul Qur'an pesantren LP3IA at Narukan, Kragan, Rembang; his father had studied under Kiai Arwani of Kudus and Kiai Abdullah Salam of Kajen, Pati. On his father's side he is the fourth generation of a line of Qur'an scholars; on his mother's side he belongs to the large Lasem ulama family of Bani Mbah Abdurrahman Basyeiban (Mbah Sambu). He studied at Pondok Pesantren Al-Anwar in Sarang, under Maimun Zubair. With KH Hamim Jazuli (Gus Miek) he was involved in the Jantiko movement of roving Qur'an study circles, later known as Mantab and Dzikrul Ghafilin. His elder brother is Nasirul Mahasin. 1
Career
On his father's death in 2005 he succeeded him as leader of the LP3IA pesantren. In 2022 he was appointed one of the Rais Syuriyah — leaders of the supreme council — of Nahdlatul Ulama, alongside scholars including Nasaruddin Umar, Muhammad Cholil Nafis and Abdul Ghofur Maimoen. His main interests are the Qur'an, hadith, tafsir and fiqh, and commentators quoted in the article describe his mastery of the Qur'anic text and the classical books; Quraish Shihab is reported to have called him an heir of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani. 1
Audience and distribution
Gus Baha keeps no official personal channel. Recordings of his recitations and studies (ngaji) circulate through community channels: the Islamic Communication Journal (June 2024), read for the museum's November 2026 harvest, counted about 372,000 subscribers for the channel "Gus Baha's Recitation" and about 140,000 for "Ngaji Melu Kyai". These channels are community distribution of his teaching, not his property, and the figures are dated platform counts, not museum-verified facts. 1
