Overview
Al-Qadi al-Rashid Ahmad b. 'Ali al-Ghassani al-Aswani — of Aswan in Upper Egypt; katib, poet, jurist, grammarian, philologist, logician, engineer, physician and astronomer of the Shafi'i school, a mufti with a diwan and works including Kitab muniyat al-alma'i and maqamat on the pattern of al-Hariri's. 1
His death
He went as envoy to Yemen and held its judgeship; the vizier Shawar killed him unjustly — ordering him crucified by hanging — and he kept saying to the one doing it, "hasten, hasten, for a noble man has no desire for life after such a state." The man who pursued his crucifixion was the jurist 'Amara al-Yamani; when Shawar himself was killed a while later and they dug his grave, they found al-Rashid already buried in it — so the two were buried together. He died in 562. 1
