    Overview

Al-Ra'sani, the Hanbali muhaddith and exegete; he heard al-Kindi at Damascus and Ibn Munina at Baghdad, composed a good tafsir, and was shaykh of the Jazira in his time in knowledge, merit and stature. 1

    His works

Ibn Rajab said he read fiqh under Shaykh Muwaffaq al-Din, memorised his al-Muqni' and mastered the rational and transmitted sciences; al-Dhahabi counted him among the huffaz. He held the shaykhdom of Dar al-Hadith at Mosul with ample honour from its lord and the other kings of the Jazira; he composed a fine tafsir in four large volumes called Rumuz al-kunuz, and a book Misra' al-Husayn which the lord of Mosul obliged him to write — he recorded only what is sound of the killing and nothing else; he held fast to sunna and athar, and his verse was good. 1
