أسعد بن المطران

أسعد بن المطران

c. 1191 CE · 587 AH

Al-Muwaffaq As'ad b. al-Matran the physician, a Christian who embraced Islam; abundant in chivalry, fine of character, an intercessor for people with the sultan, loyal to the Prophet ﷺ's house — he loved a lad named Umar, so Ibn Unayn lampooned those who called him a Shi'i: 'How could the Rafidi creed be his madhhab, when none but Umar called him to Islam?'; he visited the sick among the poor, carrying them syrups and medicines, even bath fees, and was handsome to look at. He died at Damascus and was buried at Qasyun by the roadside, by the house of his wife Jawza, who kept a mosque beside his tomb — still called Dar Jawza; he died in 587 1.

Overview

Al-Muwaffaq As'ad b. al-Matran the physician — a Christian who embraced Islam; abundant in manliness, fine of character, interceding for people with the sultan, and a partisan of the Prophet's house; he loved a boy named 'Umar, so Ibn 'Unayn lampooned those who charged him with Shi'ism: "They said al-Muwaffaq is a Shi'i — I told them that contradicts what we know of him; how could the rafd creed be his faith when none but 'Umar brought him to Islam?" 1

His charity

He visited the poor sick, carried them syrups and medicines from his own stores — even the bathhouse fee; handsome of form, he died at Damascus and was buried at Qasyun beside the road near his wife's house — her name was Jawza — which remained a mosque by his mausoleum, known as Dar Jawza; he died in 587. 1
