    Summary

Deddy Corbuzier, full name Deodatus Andreas Deddy Cahyadi Sunjoyo, is an Indonesian television presenter and former magician turned mentalist, born in Jakarta on 28 December according to the English article (Wikidata gives 1974 instead of 1976, and the discrepancy is unresolved). He became famous through major Indonesian television shows, then became one of his country's biggest content creators with his Close the Door interview podcast on YouTube, and he embraced Islam in 2019, in an event widely followed by Indonesian media. 1 2

    Early life and education

He was born in Jakarta to a modest family; his father worked as a microbus driver and his mother as a seamstress. At the age of eight he saw a magician turn a handkerchief into a bouquet and was captivated; he studied under senior magicians, and by twelve had resolved to learn harder tricks, beginning his career performing at the Ancol Fantasy World park in Jakarta. 1

He has dyslexia, and his condition sparked his interest in psychology: he took a bachelor's degree in psychology from the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in 1998 and a master's in psychology from the University of London in 1999. 1

    Beginnings and television career

He made his television debut in 1998 with Impresario 008 on RCTI, received the Merlin Award for the world's best mentalist twice in a row, acted in the film The Mentalist (2011), and wrote, directed and starred in the action film Triangle: The Dark Side (2016). 1

He presented or appeared in dozens of programmes on Indonesia's leading channels, among them Hitam Putih (Black and White) on Trans 7, five seasons of The Master on RCTI, Indonesia Mencari Bakat (Indonesia's Got Talent) and OOTD (Obrolan of the Day), making him one of Indonesia's most present television faces. 1

In 2013 he became known for a diet technique he named "OCD" (Obsessive Corbuzier Diet), based on intermittent fasting combined with high-intensity interval training, setting up a website and publishing an e-book about his own body changes. 1

YouTube and the Close the Door podcast

After resigning from the magician world, YouTube became his main platform: on his channel he publishes his podcast Close the Door, conversations with public figures and officials about news in Indonesia. As of November 2021, according to the article, his channel had over 16 million subscribers and his videos over 2.31 billion views — platform figures, dated to that month, that change constantly. 1

    His embrace of Islam

On Friday 21 June 2019, after Friday prayers at the Al Mbejaji Mosque in Sleman, Yogyakarta region, Deddy Corbuzier pronounced the two testimonies of faith and formally embraced Islam, guided by the preacher Gus Miftah, as the Indonesian article records. The English article does not cover the event, and Wikidata records his religion only as Islam, with no school. 3 2

Since then his podcast guests have included Muslim scholars and preachers alongside his politician and celebrity guests. 1

    Public roles

Indonesia's Ministry of Defense appointed him ambassador for its Reserve Component Program on 13 October 2021; Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto appointed him Brevet Lieutenant Colonel on 9 December 2022; and in Prabowo's administration he was appointed Special Staff to the Minister of Defense on Social Communication and Public Affairs. 1

    Positions and criticism

This section should be read as a presentation of differing positions reported in the sources, not as the museum's verdict on them.

In May 2022 he invited a famous gay couple in Indonesia to his podcast and received massive homophobic attacks on social media: a hashtag calling for unsubscribing from his channel trended on Indonesian Twitter, religious leaders in Indonesia criticised him, and the video nonetheless drew more than 4.7 million views in a single day, according to the article. 1

    Works

His books include Mantra (2005), Book of Magic (2007), Seven Dark Secrets of Rubik's Cube (2008), the diet book OCD: Obsessive Corbuzier's Diet (2013), Youtuber for Dummies (2018) and Millennial Power (2019). 1

    Personal life

This record avoids family detail beyond what understanding his public work needs; the articles record a first marriage (2005–2013) and a marriage in 2022. 1 3

    Impact and audience

His influence is built on visual media: from television star to one of Indonesia's most-followed influencers, and his embrace of Islam in 2019, at the height of his digital fame, made his story a running topic in Indonesian media and on social platforms. Follower and view counts are dated platform figures, not permanent facts recorded by the museum. 1 3
