    Summary

Emre Can is a German professional footballer who was born in Frankfurt on 12 January 1994.12 A defensive midfielder who came through Bayern Munich, he played for Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool and Juventus before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2020 and becoming their captain in 2023.1 He won the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup with Germany and has won 48 caps.1

    Club career

Seeking regular football, Can joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2013, playing in the Champions League and scoring four league goals in his single season there.1 He moved to Liverpool in 2014, becoming a regular under Brendan Rodgers and Jürgen Klopp, and scored a bicycle-kick goal against Watford in May 2017 that was voted the Premier League's goal of the season.1 In 2018 he signed for Juventus, winning two Serie A titles, and in January 2020 he joined Borussia Dortmund, where he was named captain in 2023 and, as the English article records, renewed his contract until 2027.1

    Positions and criticism

This section presents the positions found in the sources; it is not a verdict by the museum. The English article's Personal life section states, in the article's own voice, that "Can is a practising Muslim", citing BBC Three's piece of 10 June 2016 on Muslim footballers during Ramadan — a statement of practice and of generic Islam that names no school.1 The Arabic article's infobox likewise gives his religion as "Islam" in the generic, and its text names no school.2 Under the museum's two-source rule, which requires two independent sources to name a school for the person himself and does not count practice, his school is therefore recorded as unknown.12 The English article also records that in January 2023 Can disclosed that a thyroid cancer had been diagnosed during his medical at Juventus in 2018 and treated by surgery, and that he has since supported research into the disease.1
